The Department for Chinese Studies (Institut für Sinologie) at Heidelberg University seeks to employ as soon as possible a Research Scholar in Pre-modern Chinese History (Shang to Yuan political, social or cultural history) to fill the position of wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter (salary level TV-L 13, roughly equivalent to Lecturer in Britain or Assistant Professor in North America). The position is affiliated to the chair for Classical China Studies.The successful applicant will be teaching (in German or English) two classes per semester on the undergraduate (historical and literary survey classes) and graduate level (in the respective research area), sharing in administrative duties of the department in general and the chair in particular, advising students, and at the same time maintaining an active and productive research agenda. Initial appointment can be for up to three years with a possibility of renewal.
Candidates should hold a doctoral degree in Chinese Studies, History, Archaeology, or a related discipline with a focus on pre-modern China, have excellent skills in pre-modern and modern Chinese as well as a clear research agenda, and be willing to teamwork and to become fluid in German within 1-2 yearsin case they are not at the time of employment. German language classes will be available for this purpose. Skills in other languages (such as Japanese, French, or Russian) will be advantageous but are not required.
