Call for Applications: W3 Heisenberg Professorship for the Intellectual and Cultural History of China

The Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology invites applications for a W3 Heisenberg Professorship for the Intellectual and Cultural History of China at the Institute for Middle Eastern and East Asian Languages and Civilizations to be filled by the earliest possible starting date. The professorship has an initial fixed term of three years and may be made permanent depending on positive evaluation after three years.

The successful candidate is expected to represent the field adequately in teaching and research and teach in all degree programmes in which the discipline of sinology is involved. Candidates must have excellent knowledge of modern and classical Chinese, as well as proven research expertise in the intellectual and cultural history of the cultural region of China, such as knowledge transfer and cultural translation between Chinese and Western Civilization.
The willingness to participate in the research areas of the International Consortium for Research in the Humanities ‘Fate, Freedom and Prognostication’ (www.ikgf.fau.de) and relevant research networks at FAU is expected.

The professorship is being established as part of the DFG Heisenberg Programme and is dependent on the candidate’s successful application to the DFG for a Heisenberg professorship following the appointment procedure at FAU.

Prerequisites for the position are a university degree, university level teaching experience, a doctoral degree, and additional academic qualifications. These should be in the form of a Habilitation (post-doctoral thesis) or equivalent academic publications. The necessary qualifications may also have been acquired in a non-university context or through a junior faculty position (e.g. W1 Professor or Assistant Professor).
