The Department of Asian Studies at Ludwig Maximilians University (LMU) Munich is currently inviting applications for a non-tenure track position as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the rank of Akademischer Rat auf Zeit. Scholars should have expertise in two or more of the following fields, all pertaining to Early through Medieval China (Shang through Tang periods): a) archeology and material culture; b) paleography (excavated texts); c) history. Successful candidates will be well-versed in Classical Chinese and able to incorporate a wide range of different sources in their research and teaching. An interdisciplinary approach to archaeological and textual sources is also expected.
The successful applicant will be responsible to conduct research and teach undergraduate courses as needed. They will also assist in developing as well as teach in an English language MA program in Chinese archaeology and assume service responsibilities.
Applicants must have a PhD (or Dr. phil.) in Chinese archaeology or a related field at the time of appointment. Fieldwork experience and ongoing excavation projects in the PR China would be highly desired, but are not a prerequisite. German language skills at the time of appointment are desired, but not mandatory. However, business fluency is expected one year after appointment.
The position of Akademischer Rat auf Zeit is commensurate with the A13 pay grade of German civil servants, with additional benefits for a dependant and children (see “Grundgehaltssätze der Besoldungsgruppe A” and “Familienzuschlag” at https://www.lff.bayern.de/bezuege/besoldung/). German civil servants are not subject to social security contributions, which renders their net earnings internationally competitive. The position entails a three-year contract with the possibility of a three-year extension at the same pay grade. During this period, the completion of a so-called Habilitationsschrift is expected, after which an additional four-year extension of the contract at a higher pay grade may be possible. The appointment as a German civil servant is dependent on the fulfillment of all general civil service law requirements.
