In Memoriam: Gerhard Schmitt

On 26 November 2017, Gerhard Schmitt passed away. Gerhard Schmitt was born on 28 September 1933 in Canton, where his parents were active as missionaries. Having been repatriated to Germany in 1946, he continued his education in West Germany. In 1950, he was assigned to the Institut für Orientforschung at the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin. Gerhard Schmitt was a pioneer in phonological studies and historical linguistics, but he is also known as the translator of the entire ‘Rulin waishi’ into German. This translation was first published in 1962 in Weimar. Gerhard Schmitt was also active in the fields of myth, ritual and religion.
