The Institute for Chinese Studies at the University of Heidelberg (Germany) seeks to fill the position of a

Junior Professor (Assistant Professor) in Transcultural Studies – Economy and Society of China and East Asia (with tenure track option)

 

Requirements include an outstanding PhD thesis, publications in recognized scholarly journals, experience in acquiring external funding and an active interest in teaching. Fluency in modern spoken and written Chinese is expected. Classical Chinese and a reading capacity in modern Japanese are appreciated. Experience in developing digital resources and in E-learning is an asset.

Applicants’ research should focus on the economy and society of China in an East Asian and transcultural perspective. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to research and teaching challenging the geographical and methodological limitations of conventional area studies, social sciences, and economics. Teaching duties include the development of courses exploring transcultural interactions for the existing interdisciplinary East Asian BA program and the Chinese Studies MA. Ideas for establishing an additional focus on economic and social issues within the Chinese Studies MA are appreciated.

The position is situated at the Institute of Chinese Studies (http://www.sino.uni-heidelberg.de/) within the Centre for East Asian Studies, and is an integral part of the University’s research focus on transculturality. The Centre is a key participant in the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context: Shifting Asymmetries in Cultural Flows” (http://www.asia-europe.uni-heidelberg.de/en/), funded by the German Excellence Initiative.

The position is part of the university program 2012 initiated by the state of Baden-Württemberg. Appointment will be at the W 1 level for an initial period of 4 years. Following successful evaluation, the position can be extended to a total of 6 years. A consecutive offer of permanent appointment at the level of full professor (W 3) is a possibility.
