The Institute for Chinese Studies at the University of Heidelberg (Germany) seeks to fill the position of a

Professor of Chinese Studies

with a pre-Song focus. Applicants should demonstrate a broad grasp of classical Chinese philology and culture as evidenced by an outstanding publication and teaching record. Additional interests in modern Chinese culture are desirable, especially in teaching. Only candidates with a completed Habilitation or comparable qualifications (as a rule, a second book/manuscript) (in accordance with Article 47, paragraph 2 of the Higher Education Law of the state of Baden-Württemberg) will be considered. Excellent skills in classical Chinese and fluency in modern spoken and written Chinese are essential, a reading capacity in modern Japanese would be appreciated.

Applicants should be established and active members of the international scholarly community with a proven record of attracting external funding. Experience in the management of digital resources and in e-learning is welcome. Successful candidates will be situated on the vanguard of both research and teaching, challenging the methodological limitations of conventional area studies and adopting innovative pedagogical approaches in the classroom. Teaching is expected in the fields of classical and modern Chinese studies and in the context of the interdisciplinary B.A. in East Asian Studies. German language skills are not a prerequisite, but a functional level of German should be acquired within three years of the appointment. The position is at full professorial level (W3) and permanent. It is to be held at the Institute of Chinese Studies within the Centre for East Asian Studies at the University of Heidelberg (http://www.sino.uni-heidelberg.de). The Centre is a key participant in the Cluster “Asia and Europe in a Global Context: Shifting Asymmetries in Cultural Flows” (http://www.asia-europe.uni-heidelberg.de/en/), funded by the German Excellence Initiative.
