Vacant Position: Professor of China Studies

The Department of Culture and Society at Aarhus University invites applications for a permanent position as Professor of China Studies with a focus on contemporary Chinese society.  The position is available from 1st March 2014.
 

 

Position

The department is especially interested in applicants with documented research on the effects of globalisation on Chinese society. The successful applicant will be expected to strengthen the department’s research activities and output as well as helping to raise the profile of research in modern and contemporary China Studies at Aarhus University.
The successful applicant will be required to teach and supervise Chinese language and society at all levels. He or she is furthermore expected to take a leading role in developing new multidisciplinary study programmes in Area Studies, in collaboration with representatives of other existing Area Study programmes.

The successful applicant is expected to take an interest in interdisciplinary research cooperation, especially with relevant areas at the School of Business and Social Sciences.

He or she will also be expected to provide academic leadership in the development of research programmes in the field of China Studies, to develop new research projects with internal and external partners, to raise external research funding, and to take part in the daily activities of the department.

The professor is expected to undertake responsibility for and leadership of the academic evolvement and profile of China Studies at Aarhus University both nationally and internationally.
 

Qualifications

Applicants must be able to document original academic production at the highest international level, as well as significant scholarly contributions to theoretical and thematic developments within studies of modern Chinese society. Applicants are asked to state their visions of future developments in this field and in research on China in a global context. Applicants must document a solid track record in research leadership as well as in international research funding and international research cooperation. Fluency in Chinese language is required.

Applicants must be able to document teaching and supervision competencies as well as active involvement in the education and study environment. They must also demonstrate competencies within research management and a commitment to  researcher talent development as well as the development and teaching of PhD courses.

The successful applicant is expected to have experience of (and to contribute actively to) knowledge exchange, including the achievement of strategic research funds and knowledge exchange funding. In this respect the professor is expected to contribute to ongoing outreach knowledge exchange activities.

Non-Danish-speaking applicants should be aware that the acquisition of sufficient Danish to participate in the daily administrative and academic business of the department within two years of taking up the position is a condition for employment.

Asian Studies at Aarhus University

China Studies at Aarhus University is an Area Study and part of Asian Studies, which consists of language-based regional study programmes, comprising China, Japan and South Asian Studies. It focuses on a broad spectrum of original language source-based research and teaching of history, culture and society. The approaches used have roots in the humanities as well as the social sciences, and aim to introduce creative teaching methods solidly founded in research.
