Vacant Position: Professor of East Asian Art History at Free University in Berlin

The successful applicant will cover research and teaching in the field of East Asian Art History.

Appointment requirements are governed by Article 100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (§ 100 Berliner Hochschulgesetz).

Applicants should have outstanding experience in East Asian Art History across multiple periods and regions. They are expected to be highly skilled in at least one of the languages in the regions of study and also to be actively engaged in work related to current debates in cultural studies, including theoretical debates and questions of methodology. They should have experience with interdisciplinary projects and research settings, in addition to an international teaching record. The new professor is also expected to demonstrate a history of excellent research work, as well as experience in acquiring and leading externally funded research projects.

Along with the regular official duties of professors listed in Article 99 of the Berlin Higher Education Act, we expect the successful candidate to engage in the following activities:

The new professor will be expected

– to actively participate in the other regional research areas at the Art History Institute, in addition to East Asian studies being done elsewhere in the department,

– to contribute to the work being done through collections, museums, and research institutions here in the Berlin area (e.g., the Museum for Asian Art, the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, etc.),

– to support research initiatives at Freie Universität that relate to their area of expertise,

– to enthusiastically participate in teaching and advising responsibilities and to address gender and diversity issues as part of their curriculum.
