The School of Languages and Cultures in the faculty offers the widest range of undergraduate and postgraduate language studies in Australia. It is a centre for Asian, Middle Eastern and European Studies. Its academics are committed to excellence in teaching, and to research in languages and their social and cultural context.
The Asian Studies Program is a federation of language and culture departments’ teaching and researching on individual countries of Asia as well as in significant thematic areas, such as Buddhist Studies. The Asian Studies Program combines the deep study of Asian civilisations with teaching on aspects of contemporary Asian societies and cultures.
We are seeking to appoint a lecturer who will be able to deepen the Asian Studies Program’s offerings in East Asian studies, particularly if he or she is able to teach East Asian Thought, with a strong emphasis on China. An essential requirement is the ability to use original Chinese language sources.
As the successful applicant, you will:
- teach both junior and senior undergraduate units
- supervise postgraduate research students in the field
- undertake administration and curriculum development
- pursue an active research program.
To succeed in the position you will need:
- a PhD in a relevant field in Asian studies, preferably Chinese thought or East Asian thought
- the ability to teach into language and non-language programs, that is, Asian studies and Chinese studies
- experience in, and commitment to, teaching using Chinese language source materials
- knowledge of modern and traditional Confucianism and the other schools of Chinese thought as well as Marxism and the other doctrinaire philosophies that have played a role in the Chinese intellectual history of the 20th century
- the ability to link Chinese thought to other aspects of Chinese culture and Chinese institutional and intellectual history, and delineate the ways in which Chinese thought has influenced Korea and Japan in traditional and modern times
- experience in taking responsibility for units of study in Asian and related studies and a willingness to engage in group/collaborative teaching
- proven research and publication record in Asian studies
- the capacity to teach and supervise students from various cultural backgrounds
- the ability and willingness to contribute to school and faculty administrative activities.
Remuneration package (Academic Level B): $104,644 – $124,263 p.a. (which includes a base salary of $88,426 – $105,004 p.a., leave loading and up to 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation).
