Call for Researcher Position: Chinese Ecolinguistics (2022–2025)

Ca’ Foscari University, Venice

Position: Researcher (Assistant Professor)

Type of contract: Research position, with limited teaching duties (60 hours frontal teaching/year)

Length of contract: 3 years, expected start between January and February 2022

Research duties: The Researcher will play a key role in prototyping a Toolkit for Sustainability Discourse Analysis (ToSuDA). ToSuDA’s purpose is to assist in the characterization of discourses vs different sustainability paradigms, by indexing textual and propositional features based on their proximity to different attitudes toward (a) human welfare and (b) environmental sustainability. In consideration of China’s emergent role in the global environmental and climate arena, ToSuDA will be designed to operate on Chinese texts.

Working environment: The Researcher will work closely with scientific supervisor Associate Prof. Daniele Brombal and with an international team of language, area studies, and sustainability scholars and practitioners. During the first year of contract, he/she will be assisted by a research fellow, to be hired in late 2021 on the same line of research. Overall, the project is embedded in a wider, long-term commitment of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice to develop the field of environmental humanities.

Ideal profile of candidates: linguist with methodological skills working on textual corpora in Chinese language, preferably with a background in ecolinguistic or sociolinguistic research. Previous experience in inter-/trans-disciplinary research is a plus.
