Vacant Position: Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Premodern Chinese Literature and Humanities

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Columbia University is seeking to fill a tenure-track assistant professor position in premodern Chinese literature and humanities up to 1800 with specialization in poetry or cognate areas in cultural history and the humanities broadly defined.  The appointee will be responsible for teaching broad courses for undergraduates and specialized courses for graduate students, including courses providing advanced training in the reading of Chinese poetry, as well as for the teaching of classical Chinese to students of all levels.  The appointee will work closely with colleagues to develop an innovative curriculum at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.  We expect the successful candidate to have broad comparative interests and to participate in Core courses like East Asian Humanities and Chinese Civilization.  The appointee will be expected to sustain an active research and publication agenda and be prepared to lead graduate seminars as well as direct thesis projects.  The official appointment date will be July 1, 2015, and the appointee is expected to defend his or her dissertation by the end of May, 2015.  The review of applications will begin March 1, 2014 and continue until the position is filled.
