The International Consortium for Research in the Humanities “Fate, Freedom and Prognostication” at the University Erlangen-Nuremberg is one of ten Käte Hamburger Kollegs in Germany that foster pioneering research in the Humanities and are funded by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research. The consortium has set as its objective the elucidation of the theories and practices of prognostication in East Asia and Europe across cultures and ages, and explores corresponding notions of individual and collective fate. In this context, we also place special emphasis on research about the relation between ritual and prognostication. This includes especially exemplifying practices which remain in use today.
The Director of the Institute, Prof. Dr. Michael Lackner, is honored to announce the visit of the Venerable Lopön Trinley Nyima Rinpoche, master of the Tibetan Bön religion.
The Bön religion and its socio-cultural traditions antedate the advent of Buddhism in Tibet (seventh century AD). The Bön religion thus represents the most ancient cultural expression of the Land of Snow.
Lopön Trinley Nyima Rinpoche was born in 1962 in Nepal; he belongs to the revered “Yangton” lineage of spiritual masters, one of the oldest lineages of the Bön religion. He is the Director of the Bön Dialectic School of the New Menri Monastery, which was established in the Tibetan diaspora in India (Dolanji, Himachal Pradesh).
Within the framework of his visit, Lopön Trinley Nyima Rinpoche will create a tridimensional Bön icon out of clay that, according to his intention, “seeks the peace and prosperity of Erlangen”. Visitors will be admitted to view the creation process at the IKGF premises (Hartmannstrasse 14, D3, 91052 Erlangen) on Thursday, October 23rd, from 4-6pm.
On Monday, October 27th, from 6-8pm, Ven. Lopön Trinley Nyima Rinpoche will deliver a public lecture on ‘Bön Religion and Divination’ in the auditorium of the castle of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU). At the end of the lecture, Lopön Trinley Nyima Rinpoche will display the icon, explain its meaning, authenticate it with a ritual, and then present it to Erlangen and the consortium as a memento of his exceptional visit and a symbol of peace and good will.
