PhD Project on Chinese Historical Linguistics at Ghent University

The Department of Languages and Cultures, Section Chinese Language and Culture, Ghent University, invites applications for a PhD project on research in Medieval Chinese. The following PhD project will be funded by BOF (Special Research Fund Flanders) for a period of four years:

“A Study on Chinese Phonetic Loan Characters in Dunhuang Manuscripts Dating from 700-1000 CE”

The Department offers a thriving research environment on various aspects of East and South Asian studies, and features several research centers. In addition to its permanent staff, the Ghent Centre for Buddhist Studies currently hosts 11 PhD and 2 postdoctoral projects in various fields of East Asian Buddhist studies and Chinese historical linguistics.
    The project will be placed in the framework of the Department’s research on Medieval Chinese/Chinese historical linguistics and Dūnhuáng manuscript studies, including the collaborative project “Database of Medieval Chinese Syntax”. The candidate will receive individual supervision from the PhD advisors on a regular basis; further training will be provided in the framework of the Doctoral Schools.

 

Features

– Net scholarship amount ca. EUR 1,800 per month
– Duration: 4 years (2×2)
– There is an additional yearly bench fee for research activities

– Pre-selection results: March 1st 2016

– Start of fellowship: October 1st 2016 (or earlier)

Profile and conditions

– Master degree with a focus on Chinese historical linguistics
– Experience/interest in historical phonology and manuscript studies
– Excellent knowledge of Classical Chinese and/or Buddhist Hybrid Chinese
– Very good knowledge of Modern Chinese and English
– Additional assets: familiarity with Buddhist texts and Dūnhuáng material
