Vacant Position: Lecturer in East Asian History

The Faculty welcomes applications from History Specialists to fill the role of Lecturer in East Asian History and to complement its strengths and support its teaching and research objectives. You will be expected to teach, research, supervise and administer at a level commensurate with a Level B Lecturer.

This role contributes to teaching at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate levels, and will undertake research or engage in professional activities appropriate to your discipline area. You will also undertake administration primarily relating to your activities within the Faculty.

In a typical week at work, you may:

Prepare and deliver lectures, tutorials, and seminars as appropriate
Initiate, develop, and review subject material at the undergraduate (including 4th-year Honours) level
Actively participate in research seminars, and national and international conferences
Actively engage in service, leadership and coordination roles in the discipline, School and Faculty

About You

You will have a strong passion for teaching the East Asian history, with experience teaching a broad range of undergraduate, honours and masters level units in the field. Your personal qualities will allow you to foster a positive and high performing learning environment, helping our students get the most out of their education journey. You will have excellent professional and collegial behaviour of a very high standard. The ability to teach into subjects on the history of World War II and its aftermath and to teach either Japanese or Korean history is desirable but not essential.

Ideally, you will further have:

A completed PhD in East Asian History (defined here as Chinese, Japanese or Korean history) underpinned by research using at least one Asian language
A strong record of research publications in East Asian History in leading journals and/or major academic publishers
Capacity to teach Chinese history
Demonstrated ability for excellence in undergraduate teaching at the tertiary level in areas of Asian History, including the capacity to initiate course development and course coordination
Capacity to supervise Honours, Graduate Diploma Advanced, Masters (Thesis Only) and PhD theses, and to participate in supervisory panels at the research higher degree (e.g., postgraduate) level in requisite areas of Asian History
