Call for Papers: The Fifth Oxford Young Scholars Conference on Contemporary China – “Governance in China after Mao: Continuity and Reform”

Oxford, UK

23 – 24th May, 2016
Deadline: 20th Feb, 2016

As China moved into the post-Mao phase of adaptation, the emphasis on utopian goals and social mobilization was replaced with economic modernization and a reconciliation of state and society through new governance strategies. Whereas political reliability was emphasized for much of the Maoist era, in the post-Mao period, the emphasis has been primarily on expertise to promote economic modernity. The political preference in the Maoist era had created a “virtuocracy,” as Susan Shirk branded it, in which people were recruited into the party and appointed into official positions not on the basis of their professional qualifications but on the basis of their correct political virtues. But the change in regime goals in the new era—from state revolution to economic modernization—required an infusion of expertise into the governance structure, and a combination of co-optation and exclusion strategies for the new elites and masses. What are the continuities and reforms related to governance issues in the post-Mao era?… Read more ⤻

The CEU Summer University: What makes us Human? Philosophical and Religious Perspectives in China and the West

Budapest, Hungary
Jul 4 – 15th, 2016

Deadline: 14th Feb, 2016

Explicitly or implicitly, the question of what makes us human has been a central and ongoing preoccupation among thinkers from antiquity to the present, and in intellectual traditions vastly removed from one another in time and space. That the question seems to be a fixture in the human imagination speaks not only to our need for self-understanding in the context of a broader world, but also to its relevance to issues of practical concern: how one conceptualizes the human has deep normative implications, grounding different moral systems, hierarchies of values, configurations of power and patterns of social interaction. That it has been answered in such diverse ways highlights the great stakes involved in this ongoing conversation.

This course examines the complex and varied trajectory of how thinkers, in China and Europe, have sought to make sense of their humanness. Bringing together specialists in the philosophical and religious traditions of both civilizations, it focuses particularly on the early history of thinking about the human as approached through a diverse range of sources, from ethical and cosmological writings to medical treatises and case studies, to religious and literary texts (such as ancient tragedy).… Read more ⤻

International Conference: “The Far East : Collectors and Collections Today”

Lyon, France
24 – 25th Mar 2016
Deadline: 30th Jun 2015

Organised by the University of Lyon and National University of Taiwan.

The objective of this conference is to study private and public collections connected to the Far East from a contemporary perspective. While we intend to pay particular attention to contemporary art, the considered collections can also be focused on more ancient objects, and not only on art objects. The term “Far East” will be here understood in a broad sense, including the islands of East Asia and South East Asia. The approach will be interdisciplinary, combining art history, aesthetics, anthropology, sociology, economics or even politics. We will divide the conference into four panels:

Panel I: Profiles and motivations of the collectors

Private collectors are enthusiastic about the visual and material cultures of the Far East. In China, since the 2000s, the number of collectors is growing at breakneck speed, at the same time as a booming art market has been developing: the art collection has become above all a status symbol for the wealthy and new rich and for a part of  the middle class which numbers about 400 million people.… Read more ⤻

Peng Xiaohua: Hanban, you’ve mis-“handled” the image of the nation

The Hanban spurs a mess at the “European Association of Chinese Studies” 20th congress

The Hanban, or in its complete version the “Office for the leadership group for China’s state promotion of the teaching of the Chinese language internationally” is the headquarters for the “Confucius Institutes” famous both at home and abroad. As regards the CI there have been much criticism domestic critics, who raise the point that there are still so many impoverished people at home, and insufficient investment in education, with so many rural young people unable to go to school [under such circumstances] instead [the government] invests abroad, and even brings huge investments and send educators into Western countries so much wealthier than ours, and with so much stronger budgets for education. What is especially troubling is that these expenses and dispatching of teachers and teaching materials so as to “bring education to their doorstep”, such “wonderful things”,isn’t met with gratitude by the “beneficiaries” but on the contrary, in Canada, in the US, and in New Zealand and in other countries (not sure about the situation in nonWestern countries) there is more and more widespread doubt.… Read more ⤻

Letter of Protest at Interference in EACS Conference in Portugal, July 2014

To whom it may concern

At the recent conference in Portugal of the European Association for Chinese Studies (EACS) that began on 23 July 2014 the conference organizers in the University of Minho and Coimbra University jointly prepared two separate documents for the conference participants, namely the Conference Programme and the Conference Abstracts.

The Conference Programme, which is over ninety pages in length, was intended to provide essential information to conference participants regarding the schedule of the conference panels, the conference’s many sponsors, and events taking place during the conference. The Conference Abstracts, as the title suggests, is a collection of all the abstracts of presentations to be given at the conference; it is over three hundred pages in length.

The costs for producing the Conference Programme were covered by the conference fees paid by the EACS members themselves. The costs for producing the Conference Abstracts were covered by a grant received by the University of Minho from the Confucius China Studies Program that is administered by the Confucius Institute Headquarters in Beijing.… Read more ⤻

Call for Papers – International Workshop “The Chinese Dream(s)”

Aalborg University, Denmark
13th – 14th Nov 2014
Registration Deadline: 30th Jun
Abstract Submission: 20th Aug
Paper Submission: 30th Oct

An international workshop arranged by: The Confucius Institute for Innovation and Learning The Research Center on Development and International Relations.

Ever since President Xi Jinping in 2013 used The Chinese Dream as the new political slogan of the Chinese government, China observers, journalists and the Chinese public have debated the exact meaning of the term, its implications, as well as the motivation for introducing this particular slogan. Compared to previous political slogans such as “The Three Represents” or “Harmonious Society”, the recent Chinese Dream is multi-layered, allows for various interpretations and raises an array of questions: “Whose dream is the Chinese Dream?”, “Is there only one dream or several different dreams?” “Is the Chinese Dream an individual or a collective project?” and “How does the Chinese Dream compare with for instance the American Dream?” It is not only the definition of the slogan that is interesting, but also how quickly the term has caught on with the general public – in marked contrast to earlier political slogans that remained the property of internal Chinese Communist Party (CCP) discussions and official publications.… Read more ⤻

Lecture Series: comparative manuscript studies

Flyer Cultural Materiality

Flyer Cultural Materiality26th Mar – 11th Jun 2014
Zurich, Switzerland

The manuscript, in its wide variety of forms and physical carriers, is the primary medium of source material for studying the pre-modern world across disciplines
and cultures. The existence of shared concepts and methods in the field of manuscript studies suggests the potential of an integrated approach to manuscript traditions in a broader cross-cultural comparative perspective. This lecture series, structured as a set of six lectures concluded by a roundtable discussion, fosters  such a comparative perspective by inviting experts on three manuscript traditions (Chinese, Arabic and Hebrew) to address a few key questions in the field of manuscript studies. The main focus of the series will be on the manuscript as a physical object, the interaction and dialogue of its materiality with the written text, the circumstances of its production, reproduction and transmission down through the ages, and on its function and use at different times and places in the history of oral and written communication.… Read more ⤻
