Deadline: 10th Jan 2014
Update: The teaching requirement has been eliminated, so course proposals are no longer needed for the 2014-15 application.
The Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies is pleased to offer the An Wang Postdoctoral Fellowship to support research in Chinese Studies. Well-designed projects at any stage, from initial research to revision for publication, are welcome.
Research topics can cover any period of Chinese history or contemporary China and involve any academic discipline. Applicants in pre-modern humanities are encouraged to apply, as are applicants in contemporary social sciences. Priority will be given to those candidates who have had no previous postdoctoral fellowships.
Candidates must be able to provide evidence of successful completion of their PhD degree by June of the year of appointment and may not be more than five years beyond receipt of the PhD. Harvard University doctoral degree recipients are not eligible for this fellowship. Applicants who are not native speakers of English must include the date and score of the most recent TOEFL examination or other evidence of proficiency in English (such as a letter from an academic advisor or a degree from a US university).
The Center invites An Wang Postdoctoral Fellows to submit completed manuscripts to the publications program of the Harvard University Asia Center and to discuss publication ideas with the editor of the program while at the Fairbank Center. Fellows are expected to reside in the Cambridge vicinity during the time of their award and to actively participate in the events and the intellectual life of the Center. Fellows are expected to contribute to the greater Harvard community by teaching, mentoring, or advising students.
Total stipend for one year: $50,000
Health insurance benefits for the An Wang fellowship recipient will also be provided.
Deadline: January 10, 2014
Materials must arrive at the Fairbank Center by the deadline date.
Given the volume of applications, we are unable to acknowledge receipt of items individually. We expect to send email confirmations in late December and early January to acknowledge applications received.
Your application packet must include an original signed application form, an updated curriculum vitae, a five-page double-spaced plan of research and writing for the year of appointment, and a writing sample.
Two letters of reference should be mailed directly to the Fairbank Center. Reference letters from dossier services are accepted. Also, letters in sealed envelopes with the signature of the faculty member over the seal are accepted with the applicant’s package.
Please mail a hard copy of the application and supporting documents to:
