The Center for East Asian Studies at Heidelberg University invites applications for the position of Full Professor (W3) in Transcultural Studies (Chinese Studies): Economy and Society of China and East Asia The position is part of the university program 2012 (to accommodate for growing numbers of students) initiated by the state of Baden-Württemberg and shall be filled as soon as possible. Depending on the field of applicants the position may be redesignated as an assistant professorship (W1) with a tenure track option and filled accordingly. Scholars at both levels of qualification are encouraged to apply.
The position is located at the Institute of Chinese Studies but designed to cooperate closely with colleagues in other institutes within the Center for East Asian Studies and at the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context.” The successful candidate is expected to contribute to research and teaching challenging the limitations of conventional area studies and social sciences.
Formal requirements for a full professorship (W3) are a habilitation or equivalent (“Second book”). Alternatively, eligible candidates would be holding a tenured position; applicants at the level of assistant professor (W1) must hold a PhD degree and have published their PhD thesis (“First book”). We expect an oustanding publication and teaching record, experience in attracting third-party funding as well as fluency in modern Chinese. Knowledge of another East Asian language is an asset Applicants without fluency in German are expected to acquire sufficient command of the language to participate in administration, undergraduate teaching and formal examinations within two years.
