Four tenure-track Positions in School of Chinese

The School of Chinese seeks scholars of high calibre to fill the following tenure-track positions:

(1) Professor of Chinese Linguistics in the Chinese Language Centre (Ref.: 201500067)
(2) Professor/Associate Professor of Chinese History and Culture (Ref.: 201500068)
(3) Assistant Professor in Chinese Literature (Ref.: 201500069)
(4) Assistant Professor in Translation (Ref.: 201500070)

These appointments are to commence on September 1, 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal. Appointees with demonstrated performance will be considered for tenure towards the end of the second three-year contract. The School values a strong commitment to the development of innovative research paradigms and pedagogical approaches. Primary teaching responsibilities will be at the undergraduate level, but the appointees will also be expected to supervise M.Phil. dissertations and Ph.D. projects. For post (1), applicants should have a Ph.D. degree, and a high international standing in the field of Chinese linguistics (with an emphasis on modern Chinese), with an exceptional track record of high-quality research and scholarly publications. The appointee should be able to demonstrate strong academic and administrative leadership, and to promote a vibrant, collaborative research culture. The successful candidate should also be an experienced curriculum planner who is able to design and deliver courses in the disciplinary area of “Teaching Chinese as a Second Language”. He/She will serve as the Director of the Chinese Language Centre.

For post (2), applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in Chinese history or related areas. They should pursue an active agenda of research and publication that can complement and reinforce the Programme’s strengths in the broad spectrum of Chinese historical, religious and cultural studies. The successful candidate should be able to develop and conduct courses in (a) the history of the Qin and Han dynasties; (b) the history of the pre-Qin periods; and/or (c) key Chinese historical texts such as Shiji and Hanshu.

For post (3), applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in Chinese literature or related areas, and be actively engaged in research and publication. Preference will be given to those who specialize in classical Chinese literature and have particular expertise in pre-Tang canonical texts, classical Chinese literary criticism, shi poetry as well as ci poetry.

For post (4), applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in Translation or related areas. They should demonstrate evidence of excellence in research and teaching. The appointee should be well-versed in Practical Translation. The ability to develop, coordinate and conduct courses which are consonant with the curricular needs of the Programme and which can inspire creative and critical reflection on vital language issues will be a definite advantage.

A globally competitive remuneration package commensurate with the appointee’s qualifications and experience will be offered. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointments will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary, as well as annual leave, and medical benefits.
