Two PhD Research Fellowships (SKO 1017) connected to the project Airborne: Pollution, Climate Change, and Visions for Sustainability in China are available at the Department of Cultural Studies and Oriental Languages (IKOS), the University of Oslo. IKOS seeks to recruit two PhD candidates each of whom will work on a doctoral project within the range of Airborne (see Airborne project description).
Taking “air” (kongqi) as its focal point of departure, the Airborne research team explores how Chinese people’s experiences and imaginaries of the impact of air pollution transform into new visions of sustainability and creative forms of action. Airborne is now looking for PhD candidates who are capable of designing and carrying out a research project with direct relevance for Airborne’s general questions. The applicants must formulate an individual project, including a description of the topic, choice of research methodologies, theoretical framework, and relevance for Airborne.
While all relevant topics will be considered, we are particularly interested in projects related to environmental education (in the broadest sense), life style and consumption, health and environment, media debates and expressions, or gender and social class. Projects with a historical dimension, or projects that include longer periods of fieldwork in China in one of the Northern cities or rural areas, are especially encouraged.
The successful candidates will join the Airborne team and take part project activities. They will participate in the research training program organized by the Faculty of Humanities, and must engage in the designated research activities on a full-time basis. The research fellowships are granted with the aim of leading to the successful completion of a doctoral dissertation, monograph or article-based, to be defended in public.
Applicants already holding a PhD degree will not be considered for the fellowships.
The positions are available for a period of three years, and the PhD thesis must be completed within this time frame.
A Master’s degree with very good results in a relevant discipline such as China Studies (with a specialization in topics related to society, politics, modern history, or media), anthropology, sociology, media studies, political science, etc. Candidates must hold a Master’s degree at the time of application.
Excellent command of Mandarin Chinese and English.
In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on:
- the project’s theoretical and methodological merits
- the project’s relevance for Airborne
- the applicant’s academic and personal qualifications
- the applicant’s ability to complete the dissertation and research training within 3 years
- the applicant’s collaboration and communication skills
Short-listed applicants will be called for an interview.
