At the Faculty of History, Art, and Oriental Studies – East Asian Institute, the above position is to be filled from March 1, 2020, subject to the availability of funds.
The position will be filled for academic qualification within the DFG-funded Collaborative Research Center “Processes of Spatialization under the Global Condition” (SFB 1199) in the research subproject of the Department of Sinology on the topic “Chinese Engineers and their Visions of Space: Builders of a Networked Nation, 1906–1937”. Tasks
– own further academic qualification with the aim of a doctorate, connected to the Graduate School Global and Area Studies, on a research question concerning the research project;
– collaboration in building databases within the research project;
– active participation in the interdisciplinary research and conceptual development activities of SFB 1199, including organization of workshops, participation in publications and grant proposals, administration of funds, etc.
Requirements
– above-average academic degree (MA) in China or East Asian studies, history, or a related subject;
– excellent knowledge of the English and Chinese languages, both written and spoken;
– very good reading skills in Classical Chinese;
– proven interest in social history, history of science and technology;
– ability to do independent research and willingness to contribute to a team;
– experience with databases and digital humanities applications preferred;
– good computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
