Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU)
The Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) invites applications for a
Full Professorship (W3) in Sinology with a focus on the Intellectual and Cultural
History of China
at the Department of Classical World and Asian Cultures at the Institute of Languages and Cultures of the Middle East and East Asia (Sinology). The professorship is a full-time and permanent position to be filled by the earliest possible starting date.
We seek to appoint a leading expert with an internationally visible research and teaching profile. The professor is expected to participate in all degree programmes which involve the discipline of sinology.
The successful candidate has proven research expertise in the intellectual and cultural history of the Chinese-speaking world, for example in the area of knowledge transfer and cultural translation between Chinese and Western civilizations, as well as excellent knowledge of modern and classical Chinese.
The professor is expected to have acquired an excellent knowledge of German for teaching and administrative tasks after a period of two years. The professor will make an active contribution—as member of its directorate—to the International Consortium for Research in the Humanities ‘Fate, Freedom and Prognostication. Strategies for Coping with the Future in East Asia and Europe’ (Käte Hamburger Kolleg, www.ikgf.fau.de). He/She is further expected to collaborate with research groups at FAU.
Successful candidates show an excellent academic track record in research and teaching at the highest international standards. Substantial research experience abroad as well as experience in managing research projects and in raising third-party funding are expected. A university degree and an outstanding doctoral degree as well as a passion for education and pertinent teaching experience are prerequisites. The position also requires additional postdoctoral qualifications. These should be in the form of a habilitation (postdoctoral thesis) or equivalent academic publications. The candidate may also have acquired these necessary qualifications in a non-university context or through a junior faculty position (for example as W1 Professor or Assistant Professor).
FAU expects applicants to demonstrate academic leadership, engage in early career development and to drive FAU’s strategic agenda. FAU pursues a policy of intense student mentoring and therefore expects its teaching staff to be present during lecture periods.
FAU offers an outstandingly productive research environment as well as a passionate and multi-disciplinary scholarly community within a vibrant institutional network.
In its pursuit of academic excellence, FAU is committed to equality of opportunity and to a proactive and inclusive approach, which supports and encourages all under-represented groups, promotes an inclusive culture and values diversity. FAU is a family-friendly employer and is also responsive to the needs of dual career couples.
