Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. degree in East Asian Studies or a related discipline by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance existing departmental strengths. We are especially interested in applicants whose work addresses wider Asian and/or global contexts. All applicants must be able to frame their work in terms of broader theoretical questions. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence. This can be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided in the candidate’s teaching dossier submitted as part of the application. The dossier must include a teaching statement, sample course materials, teaching evaluations, and other indicators of teaching accomplishment. Strong letters of reference that address the applicant’s teaching abilities are also expected.

Candidates are also expected to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment demonstrated through the application materials.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Department of East Asian Studies is a multidisciplinary humanities department with established expertise in East Asian colonialisms and empires, urban studies, media studies, and pre-modern thought and cultural studies. Much of the teaching and research produced by our faculty bridges—and problematizes—the pre-modern/modern division and explores the complexities of pan- and transregional movements. The department is also home to an extremely popular undergraduate program and is strongly committed to graduate training. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching a range of undergraduate and graduate courses.
