The Department of Visual Studies (VS) offers a multi-disciplinary course of study, focusing on art history and film art. VS admits about 30 undergraduate, MPhil and PhD students each academic year. The BA (Hons) in Visual Studies curriculum emphasises the history and theory of visual arts and culture in Asia and beyond; in addition, the programme offers practical, object- and skill-based learning through studio practice, video production, curating and internships. The Department also offers a taught Master’s programme in Curating and Art History (MACAH). Another new taught Master’s programme in Creative and Media Industries (MACMI) will be launched in 2021/22.

To facilitate our programme development and other new initiatives, VS is inviting applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to contribute to teaching and research in the areas of museum studies and art history. The appointee is expected to: (i) teach relevant courses at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including supervising student final projects; (ii) to develop innovative and rigorous research and generate research outputs with high impact; and (iii) to contribute to service and development of the Department. The appointee may also need to take up a concurrent appointment as the Programme Director of MACAH.

General Requirements

Applicants for the position should have:

(i) A PhD degree in museum studies, art history or a relevant discipline;

(ii) Good track record of research, including publications, grants and awards;

(iii) Relevant teaching and curatorial experience; and

(iv) Good ability in handling academic administration and strong commitment to knowledge transfer, community engagement and related activities.

Applicants who can teach a wide range of subjects, including museology, curatorial practice, pre-modern Chinese art and visual culture in Hong Kong, are of particular interest. Applicants are required to provide information about their research records and evidence of high-quality teaching in relevant subjects.

Appointment

The conditions of appointment will be competitive. The remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include annual leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund, gratuity, and incoming passage and baggage allowance for the eligible appointee. The appointee is entitled to apply for both internal and external grants in support of his/her teaching, research and conference activities.

Appointments will normally be made on an initial contract of three years, which, subject to review and mutual agreement, may lead to longer-term appointments with possibility of consideration for substantiation.
