The School of Contemporary Chinese Studies supported by the University of Nottingham ESRC Doctoral Training Centre (DTC) invites applications for PhD studentships in 2013 (both 1+3 and +3 awards) within Language Based Area Studies. The School is recognised as one of the leading centres in the UK in the provision of high quality, discipline-based research
and degree programmes on contemporary China with excellent research training and the opportunity to be part of a vibrant research community. Proposals are encouraged in any of the following areas:
Business and economy of China
Finance and banking of China
Domestic politics, governance, and state-societal relations in China
Foreign policy, external relations, and soft power of China
Social policies and development (especially economic sociology) of China
Culture, literature and media of China
Science, technology and innovation in China
History of business and politics of modern China
Studies of politics of Taiwan and Hong Kong
Funding
This reputable studentship is very generously funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and includes full UK/EU tuition fees, plus a doctoral stipend matching UK Research Council National Minimum (£13,590 p.a. for 2012/13, updated each year) for the applicants who are UK citizens or meet the UK residency requirement and a Research and Training Support Grant of £750 per annum. UK Research Council conditions apply.

Candidates intending to apply for these awards are strongly advised to apply to the School for an admissions offer no later than 1st February 2013. This will allow consideration and perhaps refinement of your proposal before the ESRC DTC scholarship deadline of Friday 1st March 2013 at 12.00 noon, to which you must apply separately.
