The French Centre for Research on Contemporary China (CEFC) is offering three fieldwork grants for doctoral students, ranging from one to three months, to be carried out between June 2013 and December 2013 in China, Hong Kong or Taiwan. The grant comprises a monthly stipend of 1200 € as well as a round-trip air ticket between Europe and China, Hong Kong or Taiwan, within the limit of 1000 €.
Applicants shall satisfy the following eligibility criteria:
- Be enrolled in a doctoral program in a French or European university (located in a member-state of the European Union or of the European Higher Education Area), in the field of humanities and social sciences.
- Their research project must be situated within the scope of the CEFC’s mandate, which is to study political, economic, social and cultural developments in Greater China.
Within the framework of this grant, beneficiaries accept to:
- Submit to the CEFC a short report on their fieldwork, which may be included for example in the annual activity report of the Centre.
- Present their research, at the end of their fieldwork, to the CEFC research team during a seminar in Hong Kong, Taipei or Beijing.
Applications can be submitted in French or English and must contain the following:
- A detailed resume
- A research project explaining the fieldwork to be undertaken under the grant and explaining how it will contribute to the applicant’s doctoral project
- A recommendation letter from the PhD supervisor
Selection will be made according to the following criteria, which should be addressed by applicants in their research project mentioned above:
- Aims of the research and contribution to the dissertation project (please include the working title of the dissertation)
- Methodology, sources, type of fieldwork (where and how will the fieldwork be carried out?)
- Time frame (please specify for how long the grant is requested)
- Results of the research (planned publications, etc.)
- Strength of the applicant’s cooperation with French research networks (for applicants in other European universities)
- Relevance to the research programs currently hosted in the CEFC
Complete applications must be submitted in a single PDF file (max: 10 pages, 1.5 line spacing), addressed to the Director of the CEFC, by email to Alfred Aroquiame (aaroquiame@cefc.com.hk) with the subject line “Fieldwork Grant 2013” on or before 10 May 2013.
The recommendation letter should be sent directly by the PhD supervisor by email to Alfred Aroquiame (aaroquiame@cefc.com.hk) or by ordinary mail (in this case it must reach the CEFC by 15 May 2013), to:

Aides pour une mobilité de courte durée du CEFC : recherches doctorales sur la Chine contemporaine
Le Centre d’études français sur la Chine contemporaine propose trois bourses de terrain d’une durée de 1 à 3 mois pour des missions de recherche doctorales à effectuer entre juin 2013 et décembre 2013 en Chine, à Hong Kong ou à Taiwan. Le montant de l’aide à la mobilité est de 1 200 euros par mois ; le CEFC prendra en outre en charge un aller-retour entre l’Europe et la Chine, Hong Kong ou Taiwan, dans la limite de 1 000 euros.
Les candidats devront satisfaire aux critères suivants :
- être inscrits dans une formation doctorale d'une université française ou européenne (d’un pays membre de l’UE ou de l’espace européen de la recherche et de l’enseignement supérieur) dans un domaine des sciences humaines et sociales
- leur projet de recherche devra s’insérer dans la mission scientifique du CEFC qui vise à étudier les mutations du monde chinois contemporain.
En contrepartie de ce financement, les bénéficiaires de cette aide s'engagent
- à remettre au CEFC un rapport sur leurs travaux destiné notamment au rapport annuel d’activité du centre
- à présenter leurs recherches, à la fin de leur séjour, aux chercheurs du CEFC au cours d’un séminaire à Hong Kong, Taipei ou Pékin.
Le dossier, qui peut être soumis en français ou en anglais, comportera :
- un CV détaillé
- un projet de recherche explicitant les recherches de terrain à entreprendre et comment elles contribueront au projet de thèse du candidat
- une lettre de recommandation du directeur de thèse.
La sélection se fera sur les critères suivants, qui devront apparaître clairement dans le projet de recherche :
- objectifs de la recherche et lien avec le projet de thèse (préciser l’intitulé de la thèse)
- méthodologie, sources, terrain (où auront lieu les recherches et comment seront-elles menées)
- calendrier (spécifier la durée pour laquelle l’aide est demandée)
- résultats (publications prévues, etc.)
- insertion dans les réseaux français de la recherche (pour les candidats inscrits dans d’autres pays européens)
- insertion de la thématique dans les axes de recherche du CEFC
Le dossier complet devra être transmis en un seul fichier sous format PDF (maximum 10 pages interligne 1.5) au plus tard le 10 mai 2013 au CEFC à l’attention du directeur, par courriel uniquement à Alfred Aroquiame (aaroquiame@cefc.com.hk), avec pour sujet de message: Bourse Terrain 2013.
La lettre de recommandation du directeur de thèse doit être envoyée par son auteur par courriel à Alfred Aroquiame (aaroquiame@cefc.com.hk) ou par courrier postal à l'attention du directeur (dans ce cas elle doit parvenir au CEFC au plus tard le 15 mai 2013) :
