3 Researcher Positions (m/f/d) as Part of the New Interdisciplinary Joint Project “Worldmaking from a Global Perspective: A Dialogue with China”

Berlin, Germany
Deadline: 5th Oct 2020

(funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, BMBF). Beginning from November 2020, the project will be conducted jointly by researchers at universities in Berlin, Göttingen, Heidelberg, Munich and Würzburg.

We are seeking 1 doctoral candidate in the project “A Translingual Conceptual History of Chinese Worlds”. In Chinese, many terms denote the semantic field of world, including neologisms like quanqiuhua (globalization), and terms like tianxia (all under heaven) and datong (great unity), which have experienced a revival in recent years. The project analyses which concepts of world particular terms convey, how terms and concepts have moved across linguistic borders, and how the use of terms and their inclusion into new narratives create worlds of their own.

We are seeking 1 post-doctoral researcher and 1 doctoral candidate in the project “Social worlds: China’s cities as spaces of worldmaking“ (led by Prof. Dr. Björn Alpermann, University of Würzburg, and Prof. Dr. Elena Meyer-Clement, Freie Universität Berlin). The project investigates the political and societal effects of globalization in China’s cities. It analyses social interaction and communication processes as well as the role of China’s cities in global politics. Our investigation of changing social worlds in China’s cities builds on intensive fieldwork in cooperation with Chinese researchers. The interdisciplinary analysis is linked to global debates in urban and globalization studies.
