Berlin, Germany

The Friedrich Schlegel Graduate School of Literary Studies is the only graduate school focusing solely on literary studies to have been repeatedly successful in the German “Excellence Initiative”. It has as its aim the supervision of exceptional dissertation projects in the field of Literary Studies, examining European, American, Arabic and Asian literary texts, with an historical and/or inter- or transcultural approach.

In 2014 the Graduate School will award:

  • up to 10 doctoral scholarships with a duration of 3 years max.
  • up to 2 post-doctoral scholarships with a duration of 2 years max.

The scholarships will commence on 1 October 2014;

the application deadline is 6 January 2014.

The doctoral course “Literary Studies” offers doctoral candidates a structured research programme with intensive individual supervision of the thesis. Doctoral candidates take part in activities which support them in their research within their individual disciplines, at the same time placing this research in an interdisciplinary context. These activities include:

  • Research colloquia with renowned visiting academics
  • Seminars on methodology and literary theory
  • Courses and workshops in the field of transferable skills.

Applicants must hold a completed degree (M.A. or equivalent) with above-average grades in the humanities, preferably literary studies.

The post-doctoral scholarships offer post-doctoral researchers the opportunity to focus on their own research and organize academic events.

German is the favoured working languages in both programmes.
