The Department of History at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications
for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor in the field of Chinese History to begin August
2018. Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. in History or a related field at the time of
appointment, show evidence of a strong potential for professional development as a scholar and
teacher, and demonstrate a commitment to promoting diversity as a value in the department and
college. A research and teaching focus on Chinese History is required; the time period and
thematic specialization are open.
This position will have its tenure home in the History Department, a department in the College of
Liberal Arts and Sciences. The History Department employs 30 full-time and 15 part-time
faculty members. Degree programs include the B.A. in History (approximately 400 majors), the
M.A. in History (approximately 50 students) as well as B.A. and M.A. degrees in Latin
American Studies. The department works closely with other departments and programs across
the university, including Africana Studies, American Studies, Women and Gender Studies;
Global, Area, and International Studies; and Religious Studies. It also houses several journals
and professional associations, including the Journal of Urban History, First World War Studies,
and The Latin Americanist, and the Conference on Latin American History, an affiliate of the
American Historical Association. The department’s M.A. program in History also features a
special track in Public History. The successful candidate will contribute to the undergraduate
and graduate degree programs in History as well as the general education program.
The successful candidate will also contribute to a growing focus on Chinese Studies at UNC
Charlotte. The university maintains active partnerships with nine Chinese institutions of higher
education including Fudan University, Xiamen University, and East China Normal University.
The Department of Languages and Culture Studies offers a Chinese minor and hosts a Confucius
Institute (in collaboration with Shanxi University), which provides support for language training
and academic exchange and promotes Chinese culture through extracurricular events.
UNC Charlotte is a rapidly growing doctoral-granting urban university located in the largest
metropolitan area between Washington DC, and Atlanta. The University is a Carnegie

currently enrolled at the University. As the largest college at UNC Charlotte, the College of
