1. Director and Professor, Centre for China Studies
Ashoka University invites applications for a full-time position as Director of a Centre for China Studies to be established at Ashoka University. The candidate will be a major scholar of China, and will also hold a full time Professorial appointment in their core discipline. The scholar must have demonstrated track record of excellence in scholarship pertaining to China. They must have the ability to oversee the building out of a China Studies Program at Ashoka University. The position requires a lively interest in undergraduate and graduate teaching at a leading liberal arts university, a vigorous and active commitment to scholarship.
The post is an exciting opportunity for an accomplished Chinese Studies scholar to participate in the establishment, development and running of a Centre at Ashoka University.
The search is open to discipline. Applicants can be from any of the social science disciplines like Political Science, Sociology, International Relations or Economics, or the Humanities, including History and Literature. The applicant will be appointed to the relevant Department.
An ideal candidate will be a major scholar on China with a track record of top quality publications and scholarly excellence. The must have demonstrated the ability to be a major scholar in their subfield and tenurable or potentially tenurable at a world class university. Younger candidates with outstanding potential will also be considered.
A candidate should also have the ability to build wider connections in Chinese Studies, with other disciplines, and with institutions in China. They should be fluent in the relevant Chinese languages. They should have an interest and some entrepreneurial drive to establishing a field in an Indian context, where historically Chinese Studies, has been relatively weak. Younger candidates with good potential will also be considered.
Candidates should also be interested in building a vibrant teaching program on China in the context of a major liberal arts university. See Appendix 1 on Page 3

2. Assistant Professor, China Studies
Ashoka University invites application from promising young scholars who work on China. The search is open to discipline. Applicants can be from any of the social science disciplines like Political Science, Sociology, International Relations or Economics, or the Humanities, including History and Literature. The applicant will be appointed to the relevant Department.
The candidate must have a Ph.D in hand (or about to finish). The candidate must be fluent in Chinese languages relevant to their scholarship. The candidate must demonstrate the potential for becoming a major scholar on China, and must demonstrate an interest in teaching and building Chinese Studies in India.

Appendix 1

The Director of Centre of China Studies will be responsible for:
• Helping Ashoka build a world class reputation in Chinese Studies
• Build out undergraduate and graduate programs in Chinese Studies
• Help oversee fellowship programs, exchange programs and all relevant institutional relationships important for the development of Chinese Studies at Ashoka
• Produce and nurture scholarship on China at Ashoka
• Excellence in teaching commensurate with the teaching load at Ashoka University.
• implementing and supporting curriculum development as identified in the Ashoka University research and teaching goals
• Articulating and implementing a clear strategic vision for the Centre for China Studies; building partnerships with Indian and International Institutions.

It is expected that the Head of Department will enhance their career during their appointment. This means that some of the above responsibilities and authority will be delegated to colleagues in the Department as part of sharing leadership and development opportunities, fostering inclusive decision-making and addressing successional arrangements.
