Vacant Position: Professor / Associate Professor / Assistant Professor in Modern Chinese Literature

The Department of Chinese Language and Literature, a pioneering academic unit within the Faculty of Arts at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), invites applications for an open-rank tenure-track or tenured professorship (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor) in 20th century Chinese literature, and film and multimedia studies. We are particularly interested in scholars pursuing interdisciplinary and transcultural research. The successful candidate should have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and research. We seek a dynamic scholar who combines deep knowledge of modern Chinese literature and culture with a strong commitment to comparative and interdisciplinary research, and to teaching and mentoring that will attract a diverse student body. Applicants are welcome to include a brief description of how they would contribute to this goal in their cover letter.

Applicants should have (i) a PhD degree in the relevant discipline; (ii) a strong research background in areas that will contribute or add to the existing strengths of the Department; (iii) a track record of scholarly research and publications as well as potential for research grant writing; and (iv) a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and scholarship. To be considered for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, applicants should have achieved a high standing in the relevant research field and demonstrated academic and international professional leadership.

The appointee will (a) develop and teach courses at postgraduate and undergraduate levels, (b) supervise postgraduate students, (c) actively apply for external competitive grants, and (d) assist in administrative matters. Appointments will normally be made on contract basis for up to 3 years initially commencing August 2024, which, subject to performance and mutual agreement, may lead to longer-term appointment or substantiation later.
