The Midlands3Cities Doctoral Training Partnership will be awarding 410 PhD studentships over a five year period to excellent research students in the arts and humanities. The DTP, a collaboration between the universities of Nottingham, Nottingham Trent, Leicester, De Montfort, Birmingham and Birmingham City, provides research candidates with cross-institutional mentoring, expert supervision including cross-institutional supervision where appropriate, subject specific and generic training, and professional support in preparing for a career.
The School of Contemporary Chinese Studies at the University of Nottingham invites PhD application from students whose research interests include:
• Modern Social, Business, Economic, Legal, Military, Diplomatic and Political History of the Chinese-Speaking World (Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong)
• Cultural, Art and Visual (including Performing Art) History of Mainland China and Taiwan
• Popular Culture in China
• Political Culture in China
• Differences between Chinese and British Cultures
• Intellectual History of China (from the late Qing to the present)
• Media and Communications, Internet-enabled Social Media, and Propaganda in China;
• Anthropological Studies of China;
• Heritage and Preservation in China;
• Depictions of East Asia in European Literature; Depictions of the West in East Asian Literature

The School of Contemporary Chinese Studies, supported by the University of Nottingham ESRC Doctoral Training Centre (DTC), invites applications for fully-funded PhD studentships in 2013 (both 1+3 and +3 awards) within Language Based Area Studies. The School is recognised as a national leader in the provision of high quality, discipline-based research and degree programmes on contemporary China with excellent research training and the opportunity to be part of a vibrant research community. Proposals are invited in any of the following areas in the study of China:
- Business and economy
- Finance and banking
- Domestic politics
- Foreign policy and external relations
- Political economy
- National Security and defence
- Society and social policies
- Culture, literature, the media, and social media
- Science, technology and innovation
- Modern and contemporary history
- Politics of Taiwan and Hong Kong
- Law and the judiciary
Interdisciplinary research proposals are also welcome and those interested in applying are encouraged to approach individual staff members to ascertain if their proposed research fit in with the supervisory capacity at the School.
Funding
This studentship is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and includes full UK/EU tuition fees, plus a doctoral stipend matching UK Research Council National Minimum (£13,590 p.a. for 2012/13, updated each year) for applicants who are UK citizens or meet the UK residency requirement. UK Research Council conditions apply. Applicants are required to provide evidence of significant and appropriate research training, normally through the attainment of a previous masters qualification, in order to apply directly to the PhD programme (+3 route). Students without this will normally be funded for an MA before PhD (1+3 route).
