Louis Frieberg Post-doctoral Fellowships

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem Deadline: 4th Mar 2019 The Louis Frieberg Center for East Asian Studies offers post-doctoral fellowships for the 2019-2020 academic year. The post-docs are open to scholars in the humanities and social sciences specializing in East Asia, especially China, Japan, Korea and Mongolia. Fellowships are granted for one academic year or one semester. The starting date of the visit should not be later than four years after receipt of the doctoral degree; the fellow must hold a valid doctoral degree no later than October 2019. The fellowship consists of a monthly stipend (tax free) of $1,800, paid in Israeli currency and linked to the representative rate of exchange. Fellows are entitled to one airline ticket (economy class, up to $1,500) for a direct flight from their hometown to Israel and back.

The Swire Scholarship in Chinese History at SOAS, University of London

There is one scholarship available for research applicants whose proposed research topic is on Chinese History with a focus on the intensifying encounter – economic or otherwise – between China and the West during the second half of the nineteenth century/early twentieth century.

The Institute of East Asian Studies at Charles University, Prague, announces a three year PhD studentship associated with the research project Deconstruction and construction of national traditions and science in China (DEKONTRAV). The studentship will be tenable from the academic year 2013–14.
Science and the scientific spirit were important attributes of modernity for the early twentieth century Chinese intellectuals. On the other hand, scientists and scientific educators in the same period shared the patriotic enthusiasm and cultural sensitivity of the post-May-Fourth intellectuals. This project explores through a range of detailed studies the mutual interplay of science, patriotism and cultural criticism in the years ca. 1900–1950, with a possible extension until the start of the Cultural Revolution.
