Of the Iranian civilizations of pre-Islamic Central Asia, the one developed in the historical region of Sogdiana stands apart. Archaeological excavations in the ancient territory of Sogdiana and in northern China carried out in the past twenty years, have spurred the interest of scholars from all around the world on Sogdian people, their civilization, their influence on other cultures, and their role in the development of trade along the so-called Silk Road. Its summer programme aims at introducing Chinese Studies to scholars (including PhD students) and key opinion leaders from around the world who are in disciplines other than Sinology. Focusing on Chinese thought and philosophy, this year’s programme will be held in multiple locations in Greater China (Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and Beijing) from July 20th to August 17th and will be integrated into the 24th World Congress of Philosophy at Peking University, August 13th-20th. On 26 November 2017, Gerhard Schmitt passed away. Gerhard Schmitt was born on 28 September 1933 in Canton, where his parents were active as missionaries. Having been repatriated to Germany in 1946, he continued his education in West Germany. In 1950, he was assigned to the Institut für Orientforschung at the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin. Gerhard Schmitt was a pioneer in phonological studies and historical linguistics, but he is also known as the translator of the entire 'Rulin waishi' into German. This translation was first published in 1962 in Weimar. Gerhard Schmitt was also active in the fields of myth, ritual and religion.

In Memoriam: Raoul David Findeisen (17 May 1958 – 4 November 2017)

The sinological community has lost a fine scholar and colleague: on 4 November 2017, Raoul David Findeisen passed away at the age of 58. He was born in Geneva, Switzerland and studied sinology, Japanese studies, Roman languages and literature, and philosophy and comparative philosophy in Berlin, Taipei, Beijing, and Bonn. He worked at the University of Zürich from 1988 until 1999, and at the university of Bochum from 1999 to 2009. In 2009 he moved to the Comenius University in Bratislava. Raoul David Findeisen is primarily known as a specialist in Lu Xun studies, but he also did research into the writings of Guo Moruo, Chinese literary theory and intercultural encounters between China and Europe.

It is with sadness that the EACS has to inform her members that Brunhild Staiger died on 12 March 2017 in Hamburg. As a specialist in modern and contemporary Chinese history and culture, Brunhild Staiger worked at the universities of Tübingen and Hamburg. She was one of the founders of the EACS. She served on the EACS board from 1975 to 1982, was treasurer of the association from 1992 to 1998, and was president of the association from 2004 to 2010. Brunhild Staiger was also active in the ‘Deutsche Gesellschaft für Asienkunde’ and the ‘Deutsche Vereinigung für Chinastudien’.

This symposium plans to open up the discussion in art of the Post-China era in relation to both the historical and contemporary contexts of changing geo-political and cultural identities of Asian locales – Taiwan, Hong Kong and Korea in particular, and the relationship of these issues to visual production. In doing so we are patently interested in accounts that connect with the hybridity of artistic creation, critical conversations across boarders and postcolonial theory to critique – and reposition beyond – the use of visuality and cultural translations developed in the regions under Chinese-influence in a global context (including its autonomous regions and Asian counterparts). We strive to understand how Asian art history, aesthetics and practices conform, translate, defy and synthesize as they demarcate what it designates to be modern and contemporary in specific milieus.
