Bi-Lateral Austrian-Taiwanese Joint Seminar: “Equality: Austria and Taiwan”
Vienna, Austria
27–28th Feb 2017
Organization:
Prof. Dr. Andrea Komlosy, Department of Social and Economic History, University of Vienna
Dr. Astrid Lipinsky, Department of East Asian Studies – Sinology, University of Vienna
About the Conference:
Based upon the discussion about equality at the 2016 joint seminar at National Chengchi University (NCCU), Taipei, Taiwan, with participating scholars from both University of Vienna and NCCU, the Seminar ‘Equality: Austria and Taiwan’ aims to extend the scope of discussion about equality with a focus on equality for minorities and generational equality in both Austria and Taiwan. Both face formidable challenges of properly accommodating immigrants and justly treating minority groups. Ethnic/language and generational difference is central to the aforementioned problems facing both Austria and Taiwan, representing the two main topics under the theme of equality. Subjects to be discussed include: 1. Equality and ethnic diversity: migration (history of migration, historic waves of immigration both in Austria and in Taiwan, mainlanders in Taiwan); deportation and escape; aborigines and historical minorities (aspects of ethnicity, minority cultures, how to preserve one’s culture, distribution of minorities in the territory); multilinguality (linguistic diversity), ‘Chineseness’ of migration, distribution on the territory).… Read more ⤻

10th Annual Conference on Asian Studies at Palacky University: “Connecting the Old with the New”
Olomouc, Czech Republic:
Deadline: 30th Sep 2016
Since the establishment of Asian Studies as part of the university curriculum, the discipline has faced many changes in being pushed to define and redefine itself, in the process reorienting its aims over time. As a reflection of human societies at large, disciplines and the agents that carry them have their internal conflicts and generational divides. Amid changes, some practices and paradigms are strengthened, while others lose their momentum.
The Department of Asian Studies at Palacký University invites scholars from Asian Studies and scholars from other disciplines whose work intersects with this discipline to reflect upon the development of Asian Studies. During this conference, which takes place on November 4, 2016 in the historical city of Olomouc in Czech Republic, we will discuss the introduction of new approaches to Asian Studies and reflect upon conventional or even forgotten methods. We welcome not only individual presentations that can be part of conventional panels, but also proposals for roundtable debates.… Read more ⤻

MARKUS Text Analysis and Reading Platform Update
The MARKUS platform has gone through a major update during the past few months. You can now create an account, upload content, add customized tags and comments and notes of different kinds, select which reference sites you want to display, convert Chinese to western dates, and, last but not least, import text directly from your ctext.org account. We have added new videos to show most of these features under “HowTo.” More will be added and Chinese translations of these will be added as well.
We continue to work on new features including machine learning, direct export from other databases, and visualizations of tagged content. Some features such as keyword tagging can be used for modern Chinese texts; we are interested in working with data providers to add more functionality for modern Chinese and other languages. Please get in touch with comments and suggestions.
As always we are much indebted to Brent Ho for the development of these features, to Gabe Geert van Beijeren Bergen en Henegouwen and Monica Klasing Chen for the English videos, and to Hueilan Xiong and Jialong Liu for the Chinese text of the videos.… Read more ⤻
