MARKUS Text Analysis and Reading Platform Update

The MARKUS platform has gone through a major update during the past few months. You can now create an account, upload content, add customized tags and comments and notes of different kinds, select which reference sites you want to display, convert Chinese to western dates, and, last but not least, import text directly from your ctext.org account. We have added new videos to show most of these features under “HowTo.” More will be added and Chinese translations of these will be added as well.

We continue to work on new features including machine learning, direct export from other databases, and visualizations of tagged content. Some features such as keyword tagging can be used for modern Chinese texts; we are interested in working with data providers to add more functionality for modern Chinese and other languages. Please get in touch with comments and suggestions.

As always we are much indebted to Brent Ho for the development of these features, to Gabe Geert van Beijeren Bergen en Henegouwen and Monica Klasing Chen for the English videos, and to Hueilan Xiong and Jialong Liu for the Chinese text of the videos.… Read more ⤻

Call for Chapter Proposals

Deadline: 20th Dec 2015

Title (tentative): Educating Chinese-Heritage Students in the Global-Local Nexus: Achievement, Challenges, and Opportunities

This book aims to examine K-16 Chinese-heritage students’ conditions across the educational spectrum in various global educational contexts. We welcome chapter proposals from scholars whose research addresses these topics. Chapters may look at K-16 Chinese-heritage students’ situations in schools, homes, and communities in any specific sociocultural context in a global context. For example, who are the Chinese-heritage students in Australia, Britain, France, Germany, Japan, or any other country where they are growing fast in number?… Read more ⤻

JSS Call for Papers: Soundscapes of South-East Asia

Deadline: 6th Jan 2016

Music, radio, and TV broadcasts; blaring loudspeakers, public announcements, and street conversations; city sounds, sounds of progress, sounds of revolution, or sounds of change; sounds deliberately produced or emerging unintentionally, serving a disciplinary function or expressing forms of freedom; musical as well as non-musical (functional) sounds.

South-East Asia is filled with sounds; indeed, some people would say that it is a noisy part of the world. However, is it possible to identify a specific South-East Asian soundscape? And if so, where are the roots to be found, and how did these sounds achieve their current form?

The Journal of Sonic Studies is searching for scholarly and artistic contributions that deal with the relation between South-East Asian history, culture, society, and politics and the production, distribution, and reception of sounds, noises, and silence. The broader aim of this special issue is to establish “sound” as an analytical category that provides us with challenging perspectives on and a new understanding of South-East Asia.… Read more ⤻

Call for Papers: “Situating the Periphery – Temporal and Spatial Dimensions of Memory in contemporary China” Edited Volume. Marc A. Matten and Valentina Punzi

Deadline (proposal): 1st Aug 2015

The master narrative produced by the Chinese state in 20th century has — as argued by Prasenjit Duara — monopolized the nation-state as the primary or even exclusive form of political order. Since the foundation of the Republic in 1912 school textbooks, academic writings and mass media all adhere to a single message that is constantly reiterated by attentively selecting and glorifying certain events and silencing politically cumbersome topics. This monolithic history has neglected or suppressed memories of those groups that reside at the periphery. It has further relegated to the margins those memories that coincide with a range of peripheral
collectives whose integration into the nation-state is historically far from clearly known.

It is the intention and the purpose of the edited volume proposed here to provide a more complete picture of the ethnically, geographically and culturally heterogeneous space called China by taking periphery seriously and introducing it as a heuristic principle when writing memories.… Read more ⤻

Call for Papers: OPERA AND TRANSLATION: EASTERN AND WESTERN PERSPECTIVES

Deadline: 17th Apr 2015

Edited by Adriana ŞERBAN (Paul Valéry University, Montpellier) and Kelly Kar Yue CHAN (The
Open University of Hong Kong)

“Every high C accurately struck utterly demolishes the theory that we are the irresponsible puppets of fate and chance”, wrote W.H. Auden in 1951 (p. 10). Auden, who was an opera lover, librettist and translator of libretti, considered opera “the last refuge of the High style” and perhaps the only art “to which a poet with a nostalgia for those times past when poets could write in the grand manner all by themselves can still contribute” (1968, p. 116). In other words, opera has not made – or had not made in Auden’s days – the compromises with contemporary society other art forms may have agreed to, or indeed chosen, for better or for worse. This is also why in the Western World opera polarizes opinion the way it does: considered elitist (i.e.,… Read more ⤻

Call for Papers: Edited Volume “Maoism, Art, and the New Chinese World Order”

Deadline: 15th Jan 2015

We are delighted to invite submissions for the first ever anthology focusing on the influence of Maoism on Eastern and Western art, provisionally titled: Maoism, Art, and the New Chinese World Order.
From the Peruvian campesinos to the Californian campuses, from the large factories in the suburbs of Paris to the independent radio stations in Bologna, beginning in the 1960s and right into the present, Maoism and the Cultural Revolution continues to capture the imaginations of activists, filmmakers, intellectuals, and artists the world over. Caught between a cult of personality and libertarian impulses, artists such as Thomas Bayrle, Jörg Immendorff, Gilles Aillaud, Darío Corbeira, Emory Douglas, Enzo Mari, Piero Gilardi and the French collective Supports/Surfaces all fell under the spell of Mao, though in very different and at times incompatible ways. Some artists attempted to integrate Maoist political principles into their work, while others assimilated Maoist material culture, the iconography and rhetoric of Maoism—or at least what was known in the West about the Cultural Revolution—into their production and model of authorship.… Read more ⤻

Call for Papers: Voluntas – International Journal of Voluntary and Nonprofit Organizations Special Issue “Chinese Citizens’ Activities Past and Present: Continuity and Change in Civic Engagement”

Deadline: 31st Dec 2014

Since the caesura in 1989, a sharp increase in civic activities all over the People’s Republic of China (PRC) has taken place. Civic engagement draws on historical experiences and predecessors while at the same time developing fresh modes of mobilization and engagement and employing innovative strategies to further its causes. The increased formation of citizens and the emergence of a flourishing civil society indicate a new level of civic engagement in China.

This issue takes a critical look at Chinese citizens’ activities and their engagement past and present, to analyze the changes in citizenship that has taken place in the last quarter century.
Therefore we will look back to the caesura of 1989 and depict it as one key backdrop against which the developments relevant for current civic engagement are delineated.
Furthermore, we will scrutinize the conditions which have changed since then and how these changes have affected civic engagement, as for instance through the Document no.… Read more ⤻

Call for Proposals: Handbook on Asian Cinema

Deadline: 30th Sep 2014

Designed for Palgrave’s “handbook” series that brings together cutting-edge scholarship on key topics in film and media studies, we plan for this volume to make an intervention in ongoing debates surrounding the nature and direction of the study of Asian film. From Bollywood to Hallyu, from the rising cinemas of West and Central Asia to the Chinese “new waves,” Asia provides world screens with some of its most dynamic, innovative, and provocative fiction, documentary, animated, experimental, and hybrid films. However, the concept of “Asian cinema” too often conjures up visions of staid Hollywood imitations, turgid propaganda, and exercises in national chauvinism. The definition of “Asian cinema,” in fact, lags behind what is actually happening on set and on location, in the cinema as well as on the computer screen.  Not only have regional flows intensified in recent years, but global currents have swept Asia in heretofore unimagined ways. Transnational co-productions seem to be the norm rather than the exception and diasporic filmmaking has found a voice that may be “Asian” to a degree but located in Europe, America, Australia, or elsewhere. … Read more ⤻

Call for Papers: “Moving across borders in China: an interdisciplinary approach to the study of Cultural Diversity in marginal areas”

Deadline: 31st Mar 2014

(eds.) Tommaso Previato and Alessandra Cappelletti

1. Significance and purpose:

Chinese Studies are a dynamic and quickly developing research field, which evolves along with the increasingly complex Chinese society. Until the 1980s, studies on historical and contemporary China have been conducted through a few classical approaches: from philology to comparative literature and cultural studies, from economics to demographic and social statistics, from anthropology to ethnology and sociology. The ‘Chinese Universe’ has been studied from a wide array of perspectives and methods, that have been most of the times incapable to interact organically one with the other, and only occasionally have pushed the academia towards a deeper and broader understanding of social phenomena. Most of the research outcomes and findings were generally based upon and shaped by a few epistemological beliefs supporting this or that discipline, or weighing arguments for relevance of this or that branch of knowledge. The use of sources was also limited to the particular field of study the researches belonged to.… Read more ⤻

Call for Submission of Manuscripts for Eurosinica Series

EUROSINICA is a book series for monographs of various thematic focuses, sharing the goal of studying culture and literature in contemporary or historical contexts. The series, under the imprint of Peter Lang, was founded in 1984 by the German sinologist Günther Debon (1921–2005) and the Canadian comparatist Adrian Hsia (1938–2010); so far, thirteen books have been published. While the founding editors placed the emphasis on the transfer processes of classical literary works and motifs between cultures, the continuation of their work requires new approaches.

Rather than operate within the conceptual framework of “cultural dialogue” between an East and a West viewed as distinct entities, the series editors tend to a view of cultures in contact. EUROSINICA is accordingly open for studies and interpretation of authors, personalities, genres and individual works committed to an understanding of humanity as a common source of values which, rather than be impeded by cultural, linguistic or ethnic disparity, are being reshaped and reinvented in different settings.… Read more ⤻
